Frontman Toots Hibbert's vocal style has been compared to that of Otis Redding, earning him a name as one of Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Singers. Their 1968 track "Do the Reggay" was the first song to use the word "reggae", giving a name to the genre that many Jamaican musicians find themselves in and thus introducing it to a more general audience.
In the early 1990s new musicians formed The Maytals and the band continued recording and touring, with two Reggae Sunsplash appearances in the mid 1990s.
